On November 11, we will pause to honor the men and women that have defended our great nation. Veterans Day is a perfect time to teach students about the history of the day and to provide opportunities for them to thank Veterans for the sacrifices they have made to maintain our country’s freedoms. The United States Department of Veterans Affairs has a variety of resources available for K-12 students and teachers. The “2012 Teachers Guide” found at www.va.gov/opa/vetsday provides teachers with a wealth of ideas for celebrating Veterans Day in the classroom. These include writing thank you notes to Veterans, interviewing local Veterans, or having a Veteran speaker come to one’s school (an activity the Joe Foss Institute would love to organize!). Additional resources can be found at www.va.gov/kids.
